The Challenges of Born-Digital Fiction: Editions, Translations, and Emulations: The Multimedia Accompaniment to the Print Edition

Folios of the Two 1993 Editions of Penelope

The vinyl folios that Eastgate Systems, Inc. originally used for packaging its works were eventually replaced with ones fabricated with cardboard. So, soon after the release of Judy Malloy's its name is Penelope in a vinyl folio, it was re-released the same year in this cardboard version.

Besides the difference in the material substance of their packaging, the two folios also relay information about the story differently. The 1993 Vinyl Edition only hints to the identity of Penelope, while the 1993 Cardboard Edition suggests the name refers to the sailboat. Moreover, the typeface of the latter harkens to ancient Greek lettering and, so, signals the connection of this narrative to that of Homer's Odyssey where a character "named" Penelope also figures prominently.
