Beyond the Boundaries of Fantasia: An ancient imagining of the future of leadership

Iliad Step Four Exercise

LISTENING FOR LEADERSHIP

In the following speech (Iliad 1.245-307) what is Nestor's strategy for reconciling the quarrel?

Specifically, what emotions does he try to make Agamemnon and Achilles feel?

What arguments does he give to convince them to make up?

What does he (or the poet, Homer) do to establish Nestor's credibility as someone whose advice should be heeded? As you tackle these questions make sure to reference specific line numbers.

Finally, why do you believe Nestor fails in his appeal? If you were the head of your own leadership consulting company, what would you have done to help the Achaean army work past this quarrel and avoid Achilles' departure from battle?
