LISTENING FOR LEADERSHIP

1. What authority does Dio have to speak to the emperor in an advisory capacity? What might the risks and/or rewards be for Dio?

2. How does Dio’s ideal king wield his power? What should his priorities be? How should he act towards his fellow-men?

3. How does gender factor into Dio’s story of the Choice of Heracles? Does the female source add to or detract from the authority of the narrative? Why are Kingship, Tyranny, and their attendants embodied as women? Notice that Law is the only male figure on the mountain: how is he described in relation to the women around him?
