LISTENING FOR LEADERSHIP

The Ideal Image of Spartan Leadership

  1. Consider the ways in which images have represented Leonidas, the 300 and the Battle at Thermopylae. How do images affect our read of history?
  2. Take a look at the following images, how do these images portray Leonidas? How do these images compare to the representations in film and, are these images effective?
  3. Consider the images of leaders today - how are they depicted and why?

Images 1 and 2: Statue at Sparta (erected 1968) with the words μολὼν λαβέ  or, "Come and get 'em"

Image 3: Leonidas statue at Thermopylae, erected in 1955.
