Lucúma fruits are consumed when overripe, when the skin bursts open revealing yellow, fibrous flesh. The fruit is starchy and its taste has been compared to maple, sweet potato, butterscotch, and caramel. Scientific papers have shown the fruit to have antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and antihyperglycemic properties. In traditional medicine the fruit is believed to be an anticancer, an immunostimulant, antiinflammatory, and to lower blood pressure.
