Sagristia: vicino a questa usciva dal terreno in piede l’Obelisco, che ora si vede nella Piazza di San Pietro, e faceva centro sulla Spina del Circo Suddetto 3. La gran Cupola, nella cima della quale evvi la Palla di metallo dentro cui ci capiscono circa venti persone. 4. Monte Vaticano. 5. This was erected in part on the foundations of the Circus of Nero. Key: 1. Place where they fashioned the Mosaics of St. Peter’s 2. Sacristy: near to this, the Obelisk emerged from the earth still standing, which can now be seen in the Piazza of St. Peter’s, and was at the center of the barrier of the aforementioned Circus 3. The great Dome, at the top of which there is a metal Sphere that can fit about twenty people 4. Vatican Hill 5. Ruins of the Columns of Granite and Parian marble, that held up the Septizodium [colonnaded facade], demolished by Sixtus V. Signature 1: Made by the Architect Piranesi. Lateral rusticated blocks of the Basilica that show the work on the exterior by the aforementioned Emperor 2. Ornaments, Mosaics, and windows made by successive emperors and restored by the Supreme Pontiffs. 3 Portico with seven arches rebuilt in 1725 after the destruction of the other corresponding portico composed of nine arches, which occurred shortly before the restoration. 4 Porta Santa. 5 Northern part of the Basilica toward Rome, and mountains under which there is one of the entrances to the catacombs of the ancient Christians. Ottanta Colonne di marmo greco, venato di vario colore, quivi trasportate dal Sepolcro di Adriano Imperatore, sostentano le Navate variando di grandezza, e lavoro le laterali da quelle della Navata di mezzo. Altre Colonne dieci di Granito sono sparse per la Crociata; intorno alla quale, come ancora intorno la Navata di mezzo cronologicamente disposti si veggono li Ritratti di tutti i Sommi Pontefici Romani con altre Pitture antiche gia quasi consumate dal tempo. Il Pavimento delle Navate è formato di rotti pezzi di marmo, levati dalle Rovine di altri Edificii antichi. Eighty columns made of Greek marble, variegated with various colors, transported from the Sepulcher of Emperor Hadrian, sustain the Naves varying in size, and the weight of the lateral naves from those of the central Nave. Another ten columns of Granite are spread throughout the Transept; around which and around the central Nave, are portraits of all the Roman Supreme Pontiffs arranged chronologically with other ancient Paintings that have almost been destroyed by time. The Floor of the Naves is formed from broken pieces of marble, taken from the Ruins of other ancient Buildings. Ruins of one of the piers of the ancient Ponte Sublicio, formerly made of wood, and later reconstructed of stone by Emilius, and restored by the Emperors. 7. Ruins of the ancient salt mines. 8. Title: Veduta del Ponte e Castello Sant’Angelo. Key: 1. Avanzi del Sepolcro di Adriano Imperatore. Da questo furono levate da Costantino Magno le Colonne della Basilica di San Paolo fuori delle mura. Nella cima di esso era colocata la Pigna di metallo, dentro la quale stavano riposte le ceneri del medesimo Adriano: da quí fu trasportata insieme coi Pavoni pur di metallo nel Giardino di Belvedere nel Vaticano. From this tomb Constantine the Great removed the Columns of the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura. At the top of this tomb there was a metal Pine Cone, inside of which the ashes of this Hadrian were kept: from here they were transported, together with peacocks, also made of metal, to the Belvedere Gardens in the Vatican. This Sepulcher was then transformed into a Castel. 2. St. Peter’s Basilica. 3. Pontifical Palace. 4. Hospital of Santo Spirito. 5. Theater of Tordinona. 6. Outlet of the refuse of the city. This bridge was built by Narses on the Aniene river two miles outside of Rome, and is, among the ancient bridges, the only one to have remained intact until our times. Key: 1. Il tempio della Dea Cibele di forma rotonda, del quale se ne vede ancora l’avanzo, era circondato da un nobilissimo Portico, sostenuto da numerose Colonne scanellate co’loro Capitelli, cadaun de’quali è fregiato col frutto della Pina, una tralle Divise della Deità, a cui era consacrato il Tempio. Furono levati ad esso Portico i marmi del Fregio, ed Architrave, e fabbricatovi il muro tra una Colonna, e l’altra fu ridotto ad uso di Chiesa, dedicata a Santa Maria del Sole. The temple of the Goddess Cybele is round in form, of which one can still see the remains, and it was encircled by a most noble Portico, sustained by numerous fluted Columns and their capitals, each one of which is adorned with pinecones, and one having the attributes of the Deity, to whom the Temple was consecrated. Removed from this portico was a Marble Frieze, and Architrave, and built there was a wall in between a Column, and another which was adapted for the Church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Sun. Key: 1. This temple is the most intact of this form that remains in Rome today, both in its exterior and interior. Its Altar is also preserved in the Pronaos with the inscription: εCTIAI ΔIONYCOY AπPωNIANOC IζPOΦANTHC: Altar of Bacchus, Apronian Priest. Key: 1.
