Fleeing Paradise by Kim Villafana
Fleeing Paradise is about the differing perceptions of the American Dream as it relates to Caribbean nationals leaving their homes in the Caribbean to begin a ‘new life’ in the United States. Interviewees used for the project are, respectively, Kirk Villafana and Alyssa Murray-Cooks. They are of Trinidad descent and each have a unique perspective to bring to the conflict of perceptions between Americans and Trinidadians. The film outlines this conflict thoroughly–as it seems as though Americans have a ‘lax’ and ‘dreamy’ perception of Caribbean life, and Caribbean Nationals ironically have the same perceptions of Americans. However, as is a common phenomenon, oftentimes the ideas that are portrayed and sold to people are not the reality of the situation.
