My grandmother, Jean Goode’s experiences growing up during the space exploration era merges political, media and social conversations through footage, images and pictures of the space related events and ideas as they unfolded. My grandmother is not an expert in terms of space, nor has she invested herself into the nuance and depth of intricacy of the subject. I interviewed her because she grew up with and paid attention to the ongoing general perspective from an every person point of view. Adding to the archive at this particular layer, not from a peer-deemed expert perspective, but one that is more in line with the man-on-the-street viewpoint that is prevalent in the journalism industry, rather elicits a stronger connection for those who weren’t around or alive at the moment because of the enthusiasm and storytelling ability of the subject would otherwise get bogged down in the technical. This incising look into this point in space and time attempts to answer the question of how it felt to be so close and connected with space while also being so far from it.
