Exploring the Latino Metropolis: A Brief Urban Cultural History of US Latinos

A Walk Through the Calle Ocho Festival

Calle Ocho is an afternoon-long street fair festival held once a year in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood as part of the Lent festivities, and is commonly known as “a signature event that celebrates the city’s cultural heritage.” The festival had originally started out as being “a venue for introducing non-Hispanic Miamians to their Cuban neighbors” but in the past years, it has evolved to celebrate the diversity and evolvement of Latino cultures (Price 82). Contrary to popular belief, only the small section of the street that runs through Little Havana is referred to as Calle Ocho.
