Importing Other Online Media

Bringing media files hosted by third parties into your Scalar book.

Using this method, you can import supported media files wherever they are hosted on the web--as long as it has URL and doesn't require a login, Scalar should be able to use it. Note that importing media from sites you have no relationship with risks future "link rot", as the site's owner may move or remove the file unexpectedly, thus causing it to disappear from your Scalar book without warning.
To import online media, click the import icon on your Scalar header bar and select "Files and URLs" and then "Link to media files". The corresponding import screen will appear.
Enter a title and description for the media. The title is required, the description optional but recommended, as it will be used as a caption for the media in specific places in Scalar.
Enter the URL of the location where the media is hosted (the media will not be moved into Scalar, only loaded from that location).
If you wish to create any relationships for the media you are importing, or to edit its styling or additional metadata, do so using the links below (this is not required and can be modified later by clicking the "Edit" button while on the page for the media file).
Click Save, and you'll be taken to the page for the newly added media file in your book.

Working with Unity Scenes

How to include Unity content in your Scalar project.

Unity is a popular commercial game engine. Unity projects published for the WebGL platform can be imported into Scalar and displayed like other media.
In addition, with our free Scalar/Unity Bridge you can achieve greater integration between Scalar and Unity, enabling your Unity scenes to be annotated by Scalar in 3D, and your Unity scenes to call data from your project using the Scalar API.
Basic Importing
A Unity WebGL scene is made up of a collection of files within a folder. For full annotation functionality, the folder must be hosted on the same domain where Scalar is installed — which means you’ll likely need to see up your own Scalar install on a server you control (Reclaim Hosting offers Scalar as an option in their hosting packages). Note that this folder also cannot be uploaded from within Scalar; you’ll need to upload it to your server manually via FTP. A common approach is to place the Unity folder in media folder of the book to which it belongs.
To import a Unity WebGL project, click the import icon on your Scalar header bar and select “Files and URLs” and then “Link to media files”. Enter the URL to the file named “index.html” in your build folder (this URL will depend on where you uploaded the folder). Select “Unity WebGL scene” from the Media type drop-down menu, and then click “Save and view”.
You should now be able to view, link, and embed your Unity scene like any other Scalar media.Scalar/Unity Bridge
A free Unity library called scalar-for-unity is available on github that enables Scalar and Unity to communicate with each other — see the README of that project for details on to set up these integrations.
Once the integration is working, you can follow these instructions to annotate your 3D scene in Scalar. -

Importing IIIF Images

How to import rich IIIF images into a Scalar project.

IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) is an open standard for delivering images featuring rich viewing, comparison, manipulation, and annotation options. Scalar uses the open source Mirador platform* for viewing these images. Scalar annotations, however, cannot currently be applied to IIIF images.
An IIIF image is made up of a collection of files, plus a JSON document known as a manifest. To bring an IIIF image into Scalar, users can simply import the URL of the manifest, or the manifest itself, and Scalar will take care of the rest. (Note that the non-manifest files that make up the IIIF image must be hosted online somewhere in order for them to be accessed by Scalar.)
To import an IIIF manifest that's hosted elsewhere, click the import icon on your Scalar header bar and select "Files and URLs" and then "Link to media files". Enter the URL for the manifest and any other metadata desired, select "IIIF manifest" from the Media type drop-down menu, and then click "Save and view".
To upload an IIIF manifest, click the import icon on your Scalar header bar and select "Files and URLs" and then "Upload media files". Click the "Is IIIF manifest" checkbox, choose the file from your local drive, enter any other metadata desired, and then click "Upload".
*Thanks to Cole Crawford's team at Harvard University Digital Scholarship for performing the Mirador integration.

How to include ArcGIS web scenes in your Scalar project.

ArcGIS Online is a popular web-based mapping tool that allows you to create “web scenes”: combinations of ground, basemap, and layers that include 3D geometry and a virtual camera. You can import these scenes into Scalar and use annotations to place the camera in specific positions.
Importing an ArcGIS web scene
You can learn more about creating web scenes at the ArcGIS website. Here’s how to import your scene into Scalar.
- Create the web scene using ArcGIS tools.
- Click the import icon in the Scalar header and select “Files and URLs” and then “Link to media files”.
- Open your web scene in a separate window and click the Share button (it looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it).
- Uncheck the “Short link” box, copy the URL, and paste it into the “Media file URL” field in Scalar.
- Fill out the rest of the form and then click “Save and view”.
You should now be able to view, link, annotate, and embed your ArcGIS scene like any other Scalar media.
