Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Marino82e88cf89eeb02b94655b66cf941328b5c035777 Two works by Char Davies offer influential precursors, Osmose (1995) and Ephémère (1998). Both made use of a stereoscopic head-mounted display in order to immerse the interactor in a visual field navigated through "breath" and "balance," as measured by sensors strapped on with a harness. The experience then was much more akin to scuba diving than walking through the space. Even though the ocean floor was only one of the environments in this piece, the navigation evokes traveling through digital information as through moving through water.
