Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

What does this tell us about the Crusades?

by Paige Naumnik '24

This piece tells us about the assimilation of religious cultures that occured during the Crusades. Christian art being created by a Muslim artist is not a common thing one would think to see, however the more we learn about the time we understand what the relationships between these different people were like. The aspect of dressing these Christian figures in tradtional Islamic garb is something not often seen in historic art, especially when the figures are not in the belief system of the artist. This piece shows us the politicism of war and battles, and how it affects art.
