Looking Deeper: Five Facts Checked [H3 - if you need to pull out your quotes to fact check them]

In order to better understand the claims made in this op-ed, I've done research to verify five facts it presents about the coronavirus pandemic.
Myth #1: Covid-19 is a white disease. [Place quotes in blockquote using the quotation mark tool]
    I wanted to look into this claim because.....it turns out that research by the website Politifact confirms this.
     
    The Americans who were initially diagnosed with the virus were mostly white. 
      This fact was interesting to me because....According to a recent letter published in the journal Nature, this is true.

       At the beginning of the epidemic, the media understandably focused on affluent white people who had traveled overseas, especially to Asia.

      This fact matters because...Interviews in the New York Times suggest that it is unclear whether this is the case.

      The impact of this news coverage had African Americans joking among ourselves that perhaps we were somehow immune to the virus.

      We might not expect.... but, the website for the NAACP confirms that this is true.
      As crazy as it sounds, a rumor took off that this was a disease that kills only white people.
      An public health official interviewed in the Detroit Free Press confirms this story for that city, though it's unclear it applies to others.
