Kaptırılmış ideal: Mai ve Siyah üzerine psikanalitik bir deneme

Summary:

In the case of Uşaklıgil and other late Ottoman modernists, the disruption is not between two undetermined “conciousnesses”, but between a historically defined super-ego whose contents are given by State and Tradition, and an equally historical ego ideal formed through successive identifications with the “West”. This double-bind and the resulting futility, which has defined the contours of much of modernist Turkish literature up to this very day, was in fact the true condition of the “Turkish spirit” at that particular juncture, a condition which Uşaklıgil most graphically described in his novel, The Blue and the Black.

Notes 

- Suffers from a prejudice made up of a half truth and a straight-up miscomprehension:  Edebiyat-ı Cedide was the beginning of the inclination towards aestheticism, is half true. The oft-repeated miscomprehension is that it was  köksüzdür, yabancı ve yüzeysel. Part of the Republican narrative. 
- According to Berna Moran, the two trends in pre-1950's literature was the obsession with the East/West question, and the focus on only personal concerns, as opposed to social.
