Mapping Black São Paulo

Menina Mulher da Pele Preta

Menina Mulher da Pele Preta, or Young Woman with Black Skin, is a six-part film series directed by Renato Cândido and Bárbara Magalhanis centering the experiences of black women in the periphery. The title of the film refers to a song of the same name by Jorge Ben Jor, which also comments on the fascinating beauty of black women. The project began as Cândido's master thesis for the University of São Paulo in an effort to explore the social realties that black women face as they struggle with prejudice, internalized anti-blackness, and self-acceptance. The first episode focuses on Jennifer, a teenager grappling with her black identity as she pursues relationships, jobs, and university. Each of the other episodes highlights the stories of different black women, but are currently only available as trailers.
