Quilombaque Cultural Quilombo

The Quilombaque Cultural Community is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 by Clébio and Dedê Ferreira to address the social vulnerability of black youth in São Paulo's Perus neighborhood. Although the term quilombo traditionally refers to rural maroon communities, the organization co-opted the term to represent a modern space of refuge and resistance for Afro-Brazilians.

Quilombaque works to address anti-blackness in Brazilian society by providing Perus residents with cultural, educational, and political workshops and activities. For instance, the organization hosts numerous events throughout the year centered around the promotion of black culture and art, such as capoeria and drumming sessions, The organization also runs a community library, tourism agency, and social museum with the goal of preserving the region's heritage and memory and opposing traditionally predatory tourism.
