Mapping Black São Paulo

Introduction

Mapping Black São Paulo is an online, interactive exhibition that uses digital images and video to explore Afro-Brazilian culture in São Paulo, Brazil. The exhibition is organized around pages that include media and short essays about specific Afro-Brazilian artists, cultural organizations, and historic sites located throughout the greater São Paulo metropolitan region. Visitors of the online exhibition can browse the pages in a traditional linear format, or engage with them through the site's more interactive elements that use data visualizations to examine the rich history of Black culture in Brazil's largest city.  In a city where over 37% of the population is Afro-Brazilian, Mapping Black São Paulo highlights important contributions Black communities made to São Paulo's formation and cultural history. Take a virtual journey to learn more about the rich diversity of Black cultural expressions in a city that has the largest Black population in Brazil in terms of numbers (4.24 million according to the 2022 Brazilian census).

The exhibition was collectively created by Dr. Eliseo Jacob and the COAS Honors students enrolled in City Scapes: Urban Spaces & Afro-Brazilian Culture (HNRS 700) during the Spring 2024 semester at Howard University.
