Mapping Black São Paulo

Film

Afro-Brazilian film started to gain more traction in the early 2000s with São Paulo being one of the cities that became a hub for Afro-Brazilian filmmakers. Jeferson Dê, one of the filmmakers highlighted below, is one of the key figures of the modern Afro-Brazilian film movement. He is best known for his Dogma Feijoada Manifesto that outlines what are the key elements of Black film in Brazil today. Renato Cândido is an important Afro-Brazilian filmmaker from the periferia (outskirts) of São Paulo.  He has written, directed, and produced many short films that highlight the stories of his home community and feature actors from the periferia.
