Street Food

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to eat in a very small restaurant; so small that your table is located on the sidewalk and behind you hundreds of people drive by in their moppets? Well this can happen if you visit Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). The sidewalks in this city become small restaurants, where people cook food in portable kitchens all while the city life takes its course on the roads. People use these spaces as congregation spaces. This shared space is where people mingle and chat about their daily routines. It is within this space that cultural experiences and practices are shared and passed on to travelers and the like.

According to Steph a culinary critic  these small restaurants are an informal part of the economy, they are not part of big chain restaurants or thriving small business but rather portable businesses. These small restaurants are composed of a few burners and a grill. Some vendors prefer to maintain their business small, because they fear they will not be able to keep up with the demand.

Fine Dining Lovers asserts that Street Food has become a part of the culture in HCMC, tourist travel to the city to get a taste of the exotic foods that are served at night on the sidewalks. Saigon Street Eats refers toHCMC as having the the best Street Food in the world. If you find yourself in the city you can book a tour with lawyer turned food lover Jodi Ettenberg and be taken to the best Street Food venues. Tourist are able to experience HCMC by emerging themselves in the culture through eating. Street Food has become an icon for HCMC, it is through food that people from all over the world are able to experience the city. Street Food almost serves as a staple between tourist and the city, as it allows tourist to experience what life is like in HCMC.
