Here are synopsis' of the several texts I've chosen to discuss. These texts written by American authors whose stories are stationed in Saigon/ Ho Chi Minh City.
The Quiet American by Graham Greene
Love triangle between a British journalist, Fowler, and a undercover American CIA agent, Pyle, and Phuong, 20 year old former dancer from Vietnam. Though Fowler is married, Phuong serves as his live in lover. Fowler and Pyle meet and Pyle falls in love with Phuong and wishes that she would marry him. Phuong seems to have no opinion or say in the novel and is indeed a war novel.
A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain by Robert Olen Butler
Short stories written from the point of view of Vietnamese immigrants living in Louisiana. The themes of each story heavily revolve around love, death, family, and war.
Catfish and Mandala: A Two Wheeled Voyage Through the Landscape and Memory of Vietnam by Andrew X. Pham
Memoir of author Pham and his bicycle voyage around Vietnam to find his cultural identity.
