There are multiple films and documentaries that showcase Vietnam's current economy.
The Owl and the Sparrow is a modern-day film about the struggles of everyday life for many orphans and poor children. It follows a young girl, a flight attendant, and a zookeeper. The three cross paths and are intertwined with each others’ lives. Thuy, a 10-year-old girl, escapes her uncle’s bamboo factory and finds herself selling postcards and roses in the city streets. Lan and Thuy comes into contact at a local noodle shop. They instantly become friends. Lan has been having an affair with her co-worker and experiences a sense of loss after separating. Thuy also meets a lonely zookeeper, who once was engaged. These three experience a sense of loss and a yearning for family. Although much of the film follows these three and they daily activities, Gauger imbeds a glimpse of what Ho Chi Minh City is like today. This story highlights the daily struggles that some children in Vietnam endure.
Worker's Dreams is a documentary that shows the lives of Vietnamese women in the electronic industry. It speaks to the globalized Vietnamese economy, for which the Doi Moi Policy affected. Vietnamese women in this industry tend to come from rural areas to work in transnational companies. These women experience a perception, or dream, of a disillusioned Vietnam.
Saigon Electric is a film directed by Stephane Gauge. It speaks to the younger generation in Vietnam and is a part of a larger global phenomenon. It follows a group of break dancers.
