‘A Woman of Great Courage’: Women in the Printing Trades in Early Modern Europe

Françoise Loir (The widow of Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy)

The widow of Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy has been identified as Françoise Loir. She married Mabre-Cramoisy in 1670, and took over management of the shop in 1687. Her husband was the grandson of the printer to Cardinal Richelieu, and the great grandson of another highly successful printer in France, and under her management the shop continued producing works both under his name, and under her identification as "la veuve de Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy", and the imprint as "Chez la Veuve de Sebastian Mabre-Cramoisy".
