Scalar 2 User's Guide

Adding Additional Metadata

This section describes functionality in Scalar's page editor, which is accessed by clicking the Media icon icon (if creating new content) or the Media icon icon (if editing existing content) in your Scalar header bar.

Clicking on "Metadata" just below the page editor will reveal options for modifying the following:

Scalar URL. By default, the URL for your page is derived from the title you gave it when it was first created. You can enter a new URL in this text field to make changes after the fact.

Page visibility. This option determines whether the page is visible to the book's readers (whether visible or not, it will remain accessible to the book's authors).

Content type. Scalar books can contain pages which are flagged as "reviews" or "commentary" as a way of allowing third parties to contribute or respond to the content of the book within the book itself, while still being flagged as distinct from the primary authored material. In general you will want to leave this set to "Book content".

Add additional metadata. Sometimes it can be useful to add additional data to a given page. This data is only visible within Scalar via the Metadata view, but it is fully accessible to third party applications via Scalar's API. Clicking the "Add additional metadata" button opens a pop-up window with a selection of Dublin Core and ArtStor standardized metadata fields which can be added as needed to the page.

Saving Your Changes

Once you're done editing the page, click "Save" to commit your changes. As with any web-based authoring tool, you should save your edits frequently to reduce the chances of losing any work should your web browser crash or your editing window be closed accidentally.

Scalar treats every edit to a page as a new version of that page, and all versions are preserved and publicly accessible by default. If you wish to access or delete specific versions of a page, visit the "Pages" tab in your dashboard and click on "View" next to the page in question.
