Tokyo Commuters
Many people come to Tokyo to work or go to school. But where do they live?
They live in prefectures outside of Tokyo and often take public transportation, like the subway. However, there is still a large amount of people who live in Tokyo. This shows the proportions of the people who live in Tokyo by where they live.
With such a huge amount of people commuting to Tokyo, the subway can get extremely crowded, especially during rush hour. This photo shows how overcrowded Tokyo is and how many people rely on public transportation. Even though Tokyo's public transportation is very efficient, the population of Tokyo is too large. People get packed like sardines during those hours but the subway lines run very often. Many take the subway to get to school and work from other cities and prefectures. This makes Tokyo a hub for education and labor along with tourism. The subway links everything together. It can take people everywhere, from schools, tourist attractions, to workplaces.
In addition to the subway, there is also the Shinkansen (bullet train). Based off of experience, commuters generally don't take the Shinkansen since it is very expensive. It is used mostly by tourists and those traveling long distances. The Shinkansen was built just in time for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The first segment went from Tokyo to Osaka2. The Shinkansen shows how well developed and modern Japan is. The speed of the Shinkansen is incredible and the ride is smooth.
The transportation in Japan extremely punctual and safe which is another reason why it is an amazing country. The subways and trains are almost always right on time. In regards to safety, I saw young elementary school children taking the subway in Tokyo by themselves. Most subway stations around the world have homeless people begging for money. But not in Tokyo. This shows how well Tokyo controls its people. It also shows that Tokyo is interested in having a good reputation and attracting tourists. Safety is a huge concern for travelers.
Public transportation is important in Tokyo since it connects the city together and helps everybody get around. Since Tokyo is a overcrowded, it is important to limit the number of cars out on the roads. Because of this, smog isn't as bad as other cities and traffic would be a lot worse that it is now. Also, with such a high cost of living, it saves Tokyo residents a lot of money. Public transportation makes commuting easier and more affordable.
The reliance on public transportation is high in Tokyo. This shows that Tokyo is a well developed city with a huge population. The efficiency and the development of the subways and trains shows how technologically advance Tokyo is. It also shows how concerned the city is with the environment. It saves energy and decreases the amount of cars out on the streets which then reduces the smog in Tokyo.
