Californio's

The wealthy Spanish Families were called Californios, they lived off the benefits of the agricultural and resources in California. Many have been given land from Spain but after 1821 other families were getting land from Mexico. Mexico, now independent, was trying to get people to settled in the area that was known as “Alta California.”
Californio wealth was tie to the land holding and credit of markets around their homes. The families have orchards and crops, but their biggest wealth was the cattle that their owned.

The Californio’s are a group that was originally from Spain, but they do not label themselves Spanish. They are the ones who first started the mission in California. The group was people who were born on United State soil in California when Spanish and the Mexico had control of the area. The Californio’s prospered and help supply the local city with food and wine. They worked the rancho, or vineyards and began developing a lifestyle of local foods, a culture, and a daily need for wine. They enjoyed the black and red fruit wines.
