This was where one of the greatest California wines before and after Prohibition came from. One of the Disciples of the owner, Dr. John W. Hyde, A viticulurist, plants 400 acres of Piont Noir, Cabernet, and Zinfandel. By the early 1880s, the owner was shipping the wines across United States and as far as to his old Vineyard in New York. When Fountain Grove closed, it was in 1951 after one of the later owner's widow left the winery. She left it to decay and fall into neglect (1).
