Voltaire to Derrey de Rocqueville - 1777 (EE: 1769 July 12)
To M. Derrey de Rocqueville lawyer at
the Toulouse Parliament*
The 1777
1 You are proof, Sir, of what I have said
2 publicly, that the eloquence which reigned in Paris under
3 the great age of Louis XIV, is taking refuge today
4 in the provinces. I would be quite amazed if Louis Dussol does not
5 owe you his fortune. He is poor, he should share
6 with the poor; he is part of the family: he must therefore have
7 the best share. This is how nature would judge
8 this trial, if one did her the honor to consult her.
9 Any law that contradicts nature is quite unfair…

10 I have the honor to be with all the respect that you
11 deserve, sir, your etc.
