The figures, photographs, video captures and recordings in this chapter offer material evidence for the theories presented in the Introduction of the print book.
We begin with the physical media comprising the hypermedia novel Uncle Buddy's Phantom Funhouse, much of which provide clues for solving the mysterious disappearance of the titular character though not included with its emulated version. This omission begs the question, "What is the work when it involves not just the story conveyed digitally but also with the physical media accompanying it?" As important, throughout the book we interrogate how best to translate a work of born-digital media—whether through restoration or reconstruction—for the larger purpose of preserving our cultural heritage in a way that contextualizes it for future audiences and, at the same time, maintains its integrity in the present. Experiencing the documentation of the redesigned Victory Garden logoand the differences in the look and feel of afternoon, a story's loading screens is aimed to bring our audience along in our exploration.
