Chapter 1 of the book focuses on emulation, one of the three approaches to digital preservation. The 12 media assets presented here serve to highlight its affordances and constraints and underscore the need for attending to the integrity of the work and the human experience with it. The comparison of the opening screens of the 1993 floppy disk and the 2016 DOSBox emulated version of its name is Penelope, for example, shows the differences in functionality relating to speed affecting the tempo of the reading experience.
