The Allan Hancock Foundation Archive

Sound Recordings

Under the auspices of the Hancock Foundation, KUSC began broadcasting concerts, lectures, and news in 1946. The concerts and lectures were broadcast from the auditorium in the Hancock Foundation Building where they were captured on glass radio transcription discs. The classical recordings included performances of classical masters such as Mozart and Bach, but also contemporary composers including Ingolf Dahl (a member of the faculty of the USC School of Music), Sergei Rachmaninoff, Hector Villa Lobos, Ernst Toch, and William Grant Still.  Performers included Loren Powell, Isla Lora Detter, Catherine Donaldson, Stephen De'Ak, John Robert Crown, the Brodetsky Ensemble, and the Hancock Ensemble (with Allan Hancock often performing).
