The Allan Hancock Foundation Archive

KUSC

KUSC was established in 1946 through a generous donation from Allan Hancock, who provided funds to mount a broadcast tower atop the Hancock Foundation building. Manned by students, the station began broadcasting on October 24th. Much of the content was provided by the student orchestra at USC, and featured world-class musicians in guest appearances as well as members of the USC School of Music faculty. The station also broadcast lectures, radio plays, and news broadcasts. In 2017, the USC Libraries received a grant from the Association for Recorded Sound Collections to digitize these broadcasts, captured on fragile and ephemeral glass broadcast disks.
