Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Your first step in the encoding process should always be to add a div element inside the body element. Div elements mark the different sections of a text. A short text like a poem may have only one div, while a novel will have a div for each chapter and a long essay with section headers will have a div for each section.
1. To add a div element, open the Element Palette by clicking the palette icon in the top toolbar.
2. In the Element Palette, find the div element, which you’ll find under the Sections menu.
3. Click and hold the div element and drag it to its place to the right of the main body element. The interface shows a green line where the element will be inserted. When the green line appears to the right of the body element, release the div to insert it.
Dividing Text into Sections with Div Elements
For longer texts that include chapters or sections with headings, you need to create a new div element for each section.
1. Split your main div element by placing your cursor before the section/chapter heading and hitting CTRL + Enter on your keyboard.
Now you can navigate through your document by clicking the div elements shown in the Table of Contents panel on the left side of your screen.
2. Continue to split the div element to create a separate div for each section of your text.
