Importing Text to FairCopy
Import Methods
There are three options for importing text into FairCopy:A. For longer texts: Import a plain text file (.txt). See instructions below under "How to Import a Plain Text File."
B. For very short texts: Copy and paste text directly into a blank text document in FairCopy.
C. For a document already encoded in TEI: Import a TEI-encoded document as an .xml file. To import an .xml file, follow steps 4-10 of “How to Import a Plain Text File” below, but choose an .xml file to import instead of a .txt file
How to Import a Plain Text File
If you have access to a plain text file version of your text via Project Gutenberg or another digital archive, download the .txt file to your computer and skip ahead to Step 4. If you do not have a .txt file, follow Steps 1-3 and then proceed.1. Use a word processor like Microsoft Word to edit your text as needed, then click Save As.
2. Select Plain Text (*.txt) from the dropdown menu for file type and click Save.
3. In the pop-up window that appears, select the Other encoding button and then select Unicode (UTF-8). Click OK to save.
4. Create a TEI document in FairCopy by clicking New Resource.
5. Use the naming conventions shown in the screenshot below and select TEI Document as the Resource Type. Click Save.
6. Once the TEI Document is created, click its name to open the folder. You will see the following screen showing the automatically-created TEI Header file:
7. Click Import Texts. In the pop-up window that appears, click Select Files.
8. Select the .txt file you saved on your computer. A successful import will yield the following window. Click Close.
9. Click the name of the plain text document you just imported to open the FairCopy editing interface, which will look similar to this:
10. Click the edit icon next to the save icon in the upper right corner of the screen, and rename the text document “text” for both the Resource Name and ID. Click Save.
