Representations of Classical Greek Monuments : An Exploration of the Visual Culture

Temple of Olympian Zeus

The Temple of Olympian Zeus still stands proud in Athens. When comparing the old photos with the new ones, the structure seems to have remained the same. However, one can see the relatively recent excavation of the three-step base to the building. The growth of trees and grass can also be seen incorporated among the multi-story buildings behind the temple to the right of the Arch of Hadrian. The picture by Constantine Athanassiou highlights the fallen column, and with it the development of apartment structures and complexes in the background. Now, there is a barrier around the main temple, most likely in order to prevent any further deterioration caused by the masses of tourists visiting daily. One can also see the development of the Parthenon on the Acropolis. The crane in the Parthenon and the new lookout with the Greek flag is visible from the new version of the photo taken by Petros Moraites.
