Representations of Classical Greek Monuments : An Exploration of the Visual Culture

Erectheion

The Erectheion once stood proud as the haven for the giant cult statue of Athena. After some thievery and destruction, the Erectheion remained only a shell of its former glory. Now, the left wall is mostly restored, with the right one steadily gaining height. Restorers seem to have finished a sixth column, along with the top portion of the six columns. On the right side to the back is another entrance. The roof has been fully restored, along with portions of the supporting columns and the foundation that it stands on. The famous Caryatid statues on the other side of the Erectheion are all replicas of the originals that are kept in the Acropolis Museum and the British Museum. Moreover, the whole back wall to the building has been restored after its destruction and lights were installed at the bottom for better views in the evenings.
