Representations of Classical Greek Monuments : An Exploration of the Visual Culture

Propylaea

As the entrance to the Acropolis, the Propylaea is hard to miss. Due to bombings and wars, the once magnificent building was left in shambles. The frieze and the walls were blown to pieces, with the columns uneven and skewed. In the more recent photos, one can see the development of the top frieze and roof and the straightening of the foundational columns. There’s a smoothened staircase with metal rungs for the numerous tourists that visit daily. One of the wings on the left side is supported with metal poles and wooden platforms and the surrounding structures including the Temple of Athena Nike and the stairs, all seem to have been restored and polished.
