Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Deborah: An Introduction

The story of Deborah is a significant one in that it shows the strength and capability of a woman to lead a nation against a powerful enemy. Instead of her husband Barak, God chooses to call Deborah to save and lead his people. Deborah not only had the faith and humility to yield to God's calling, she also had the trust and respect of the Israelites. Deborah has been interpreted many times throughout history, either through art or through biblical interpretations. In the mid-19th century for example, although the typical role of a woman was not expected to be in the public domain, they were considered however the moral keepers of their homes. The image of Deborah has never been a negative one, but there have been some who tried to play down her leadership role. Others who have written about her have praised her and the role she accepted, proclaiming that her role in the bible proves that God can call a woman or a man to do his work. The significant role that Deborah played is important for women from the past, present, and the future. She shows women that even through adversity, they can overcome and be triumphant in whatever they are called to do. In the late 1940's France, Women were seen as influential beings. They influenced the work done out of the home but their greatest strengths as deemed by society were at home.
