Reading the Bible with the Dead

Cain and Abel

Cain and Abel were sons born from Adam and Eve. Cain was born first and then Abel. Cain was keeper of the soil and what grew from it while Abel was the keeper of the flocks. Cain offered some food from his soil to God, Abel offered the fat portion of his first flock to God. God favored Abel's offering and this angered Cain. He became jealous and frustrated and God could see that, so he warned him not let sin greet him at the door. Cain was still hurt and angry by being disfavored by the Lord and he told Abel to come with him to the fields. It was there that Cain killed his brother Abel and his blood shed all over the ground. God then asked Cain where his brother was and Cain responded to the Lord with, "What am I, my brother's keeper?" God told Cain that he would be punished. Cain felt his punishment was too strong. God had said that he would wander the earth and not be able to have anything out the soil to eat or cultivate. Cain worried what if someone wanted to kill him. God assured him if anyone attempted to kill him that they would be punished seven times worse. Cain left and wandered off and he married and had a son. His generations continued and we witness the birth of the Cainnites.
