Professor Elsa Mariani Hernández is Library Director at the Universidad Ana G. Méndez, Carolina Campus. The library holds several collections: Circulation, Reference, Reserve, Ana G. Méndez Collection, Jesús T. Piñero Collection, Numismatics Collection, and Electoral Processes Collection. The Special Collections Room, where this interview was hosted, holds the Alberto Maldonado Ruiz Collection, who served as Chancellor for the past 20 years, and the Alfredo Ayala Collection, which focuses on culinary arts and the hospitality industry. In the interview, Prof. Elsa Mariani explains some of the preventive measures undertaken before the hurricane, such as disconnecting electronic equipment and placing plastic coverings, covering book shelfs with plastic sheets, removing materials such as cardboard boxes from the floor, and relocating resources away from areas that have glass ceilings.
During the hurricane, water entered through the lobby. Due to the lack of power and the time period during which access was not possible, some of the equipment, furniture, and resources in the Circulation area were affected by mold. Fortunately, the situation was controlled through prompt institutional response and the deployment of work teams. Later, thanks to funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the institution was able to hire a company for cleaning and mold removal and to purchase materials for future emergencies.
Prof. Elsa Mariani underscores the importance of prompt and effective institutional response in order to continue to offer services to the students and the surrounding community.

La profesora Elsa Mariani Hernández es la Directora de la Biblioteca de la Universidad Ana G. Méndez, recinto de Carolina. La biblioteca cuenta con las colecciones de Circulación, Reserva, Referencia, Colección Ana G. Méndez, Colección Jesús T. Piñero, Colección Numismática y Colección de Procesos Electorales. La Sala de Colecciones Especiales alberga la Colección Lcdo. Alberto Maldonado Ruiz, quien fue Rector de la institución, y la Colección Alfredo Ayala, dedicada a las artes culinarias y la industria de la hospitalidad.
En la entrevista, la Profa. Elsa Mariani explica las medidas preventivas que se tomaron en la biblioteca, tales como desconectar los equipos electrónicos y cubrirlos con plástico, cubrir anaqueles con toldos, recoger material del piso, tales como cajas de cartón, y relocalizar recursos que se encontraban en espacios con techos de cristal.
Durante el huracán, entró agua en los vestíbulos. Debido a la falta de energía eléctrica y los días que pasaron en los que nadie pudo entrar al edificio, los equipos, muebles y algunos recursos del área de Circulación fueron afectados por hongo. Afortunadamente, la respuesta rápida y organizada de parte de la institución y los equipos de trabajo logró mitigar la situación. Más adelante, gracias a fondos otorgados por el National Endowment for the Humanities, se pudo contratar una compañía para llevar a cabo tareas de asperjación y adquirir materiales para manejar futuras emergencias.
La Profa. Elsa Mariani subraya la importancia de una respuesta institucional rápida y efectiva para poder continuar ofreciendo servicios a los estudiantes y la comunidad en general.
