The International Prester John Project: How A Global Legend Was Created Across Six Centuries

Pero Tafur

Pero (Pedro) Tafur (c. 1410-. 1484) was a Castilian traveler and historian. Between 1436 and 1439 Tafur embarekd on a journey that took him to three continents, allegedly participating in battles and executing diplomatic missions. He met fellow traveler Niccolò da Conti in the Sinai Peninsula, where Conti shared with Tafur information about southeast Asia.

Fifteen years later, Tafur penned an account of these travels, one of few by Castilian travelers in this period, which survive in a single manuscript. The text comments on the legend of Prester John.
