Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Documents were selected under the guidance of Dr. Mary Neuburger and digitized with the cooperation of the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at UT Austin and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library. Graduate students from REE 381: Graduate Seminar in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Civilizations and Cultures also contributed descriptions of folders and key documents. Ongoing digitization work for the project is being performed by Ian Goodale and Nicole Marino, and early digitization efforts and project organization was done by Mary Rader and Esmeralda Moscatelli.
Images used on the site are sourced from the LBJ Presidential Library's online photo archive and the Wikimedia Commons, including work by František Dostál. Inspiration for the timeline on this site was taken from a timeline prepared by Radio Free Europe.
