Piracy
INTRODUCTION
It isn’t hyperbole to imagine that everyone knows at least a little bit of the history of the pirates in the Caribbean Sea. The historical impact of the reign of pirates have shaped the cultures and histories of the Caribbean Sea. Many have become familiar with the names and reputations of some of the most infamous pirates to ever take up the Jolly Roger (also known as the Skull-and-Crossbones). These pirates include the likes of Edward Teach (Blackbeard), Bartholomew Roberts, and Henry Morgan. These pirates helped the legacy of piracy remain a part of our collective culture, whether it be in movies or as Halloween costumes.
However, the history of pirates and piracy is extremely complex. Part of the complexity comes from how these individuals became pirates. While the collective mindset sees these pirates as free men who made the choice, many pirates were already seasoned sailors under different empires before immediately being removed from service. Another side of the coin is piracy outside of the Caribbean region. The legacy of pirates stretches globally, ranging from antiquity to the modern day. In order to further understand these complexities, let’s go to the activity.
