Gender Identity

According to Oxford Languages, the term "gender identity" is defined as an individual's personal sense of having a particular gender. Gender is a complex concept and is often confused with sex. A doctor assigns your sex to your birth certificate based on your sexual reproductive organs or genitals and the chromosomes made up from your DNA. Sex is either male or female. Gender, on the other hand, isn't as black and white. It has social, legal, and societal implications. Most people conform to a set of societal standards based on their gender, which includes expectations on how to look, dress, behave, and more. Gender identity is contingent upon a persons views on their gender and how they want to express it. Gender expression can come in the form of clothes, hairstyle, makeup, behavior, and other social expression to outwardly display their identity.
