Existen una serie de medidas de seguridad que las mujeres defensoras de derechos humanos pueden tomar para mejorar su protección. Desde el desarrollo de capacidades en técnicas de seguridad hasta el apoyo puntual en casos de emergencia, las defensoras han identificado estrategias adicionales de protección no menos importantes, tales como la capacidad de llevar a cabo actividades de incidencia y cabildeo, la construcción de alianzas y de redes de apoyo, la búsqueda de fuentes fiables de financiación y recaudación de fondos y el aprendizaje de técnicas de auto-cuidado. Todas estas medidas pueden ayudar a asegurar que las defensoras puedan trabajar en un entorno más seguro, y en grupos y organizaciones más sostenibles.
Esta Caja de Herramientas/“Tool Kit” pretende ser una guía sencilla y accesible a algunos de los múltiples recursos existentes en apoyo a mujeres activistas que trabajan para la defensa de la tierra y del medioambiente. Está dirigida a defensoras que forman parte de organizaciones de mujeres, mixtas, y a aquellas que actúan de forma independiente.

La Iniciativa Mesoamericana de Mujeres Defensoras de Derechos Humanos (IM-Defensoras) inició su trabajo en 2010 con el fin de dar una respuesta integral y regional al aumento de la violencia contra las defensoras de derechos humanos en Mesoamérica.
Actualmente, la IM-Defensoras busca fortalecer y vincular a defensoras que participan en distintas organizaciones y movimientos sociales para fortalecer redes de protección y solidaridad entre ellas y aumentar la visibilidad, el reconocimiento y el impacto de su trabajo por los derechos humanos.

Canada’s Guidelines on Supporting Human Rights Defenders (the Guidelines) is a clear statement of Canada’s commitment to supporting the vital work of human rights defenders. The Guidelines outline Canada’s approach and offer practical advice for officials at Canadian missions abroad and at Headquarters to promote respect for and support human rights defenders. Missions should do their utmost to implement these Guidelines, recognizing that each approach should be tailored to local contexts and circumstances, and respond to the specific needs of individual human rights defenders. Section 4 of these Guidelines provides detailed guidance for Canada’s diplomatic missions.
