Installation Archive: A Capsule Aesthetic

Project Methodology: database structure and metadata categories

Database categories for organizing and assigning metadata

Work Title: title of the actual work of art in question (e.g., "Pour Your Body Out" installation done by Rist).

Artist Name: These are based on ULAN names. If a particular artist isn't in there, librarian advised me to simply model based on those that do exist. http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/ulan/

Date of work: Date(s) the actual work of art in question was created. Includes start and end dates. Be sure to input in machine-readable format (e.g., 2010_12_4; year, month, date separated by underscore)

Artist website: link to the artist's (or gallery's) website; presumably offers more context/info on artist and work in question. (e.g., http://www.pipilottirist.net/)

Title and Dates of exhibition: title of the exhibition in which work is shown (if relevant) and dates. (e.g., Video Art Now ((e.g., 2010_12_4; year, month, date separated by underscore))

Venue of Exhibition: place/venue where the exhibition occured. Usually a museum or gallery. Search under "name" in library of congress to get result. http://authorities.loc.gov/ (e.g., Museum of Modern Art (New York, N.Y.))

City of Exhibition: city in which exhibited was hosted. Search under "name" in library of congress (and/or Getty Vocabularies if you have historic or funky city for whatever reason.) (e.g., New York (City))

Materials: list of materials used in artist's work. Search Getty Art and Arch Thesaurus to use standard format. (Simply listing how it was written in catalog or elsewhere won't allow it to be searchable as easily as using Getty format.) http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/aat/

Dimensions: dimensions of the installation (if given). Width x Height x Depth units. (e.g., 98 x 45 x 110 mm/76 x 3 x 38 in)

Copyright/Credit Line: copyright and/or credit line as it might appear if you used the work of art image in traditional publication. This isn't strictly necessary, but may be helpful for eventual cross-referencing and permission-seeking. It can be put in any format you want, based on what gallery/artist requests. If not clear, just be consistent in description.

Documentation Genre: genre of documentation; what is documented exactly (for ex., larger exhibition, user experience, museum propaganda, etc.) I created these categories and they might be in flux for a while. Goal is to be able to offer an eventual drop-down menu.

Type of Documentation: file format of documentation; e.g. moving image, still image, audio, etc. I created these categories and they might be in flux for a while. Goal is to be able to offer an eventual drop-down menu.

Source of Documentation: where did social media documentation come from. e.g. Vimeo, Youtube, etc.

Contributor: username of the social media uploader. (e.g., oliverino2002)

Social Media URL: link to URL where video/image is currently hosted.

Social Media thumbnail URL: in cases where such a thing exists. Category might become "archival thumbnail" which I create on my own.

User Title: title given to the file by the original user/uploader.

Date Uploaded: date the user/uploader added file to social media platform. (e.g., 2010_12_4; year, month, date separated by underscore)

Record Creation Date: date I added the file and metadata to my collection. This could be useful eventually if you want people to be able to search by "recent uploads" or "date added", etc. (e.g., 2010_12_4; year, month, date separated by underscore)

Archived URL: link to the URL I've assigned the file in my archive. (e.g., http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/blake-a-figure-bowing-before-a-seated-old-man-with-his-arm-outstretched-in-benediction-a00001)
[Archived URL thumbnail (if I make them): borrow from Tate if you want; e.g., http://www.tate.org.uk/art/images/work/A/A00/A00001_8.jpg]

Notes: place to add/edit comments as we're working on database.
