Haiti to Harlem: Toussaint L'Ouverture & Jacob Lawrence

Paintings to Prints

Printmaking is an inherently revolutionary medium. From the invention of the Gutenberg Press to the protest signs used to promote political causes today, printing has been used as the messenger of every kind of ideology. In the 1980s, Lawrence likely saw the use of printmaking in protests and rallies. His decision to bring back L'Ouverture in print rather than in paint shows a shift from a figure to be remembered in museums to an on-the-ground hero supporting marginalized people today.

This section presents the original tempera-painted panels and descriptive captions alongside the prints, creating a side-by-side comparison that enhances understanding of Lawrence’s evolving vision.
