About the Curators

46117 From Paintings to Prints Printmaking is an inherently revolutionary medium. From the invention of the Gutenberg Press to the protest signs used to promote political causes today, printing has been used as the messenger of every kind of ideology. In the 1980s, Lawrence likely saw the use of printmaking in protests and rallies. His decision to bring back L'Ouverture as a figure no longer in paint but in print shows a shift from a figure to be remembered in museums to an on-the-ground hero supporting marginalized people today.
Our Curatorial Class of 2024 worked hard to highlight the Haitan Revolution, Toussaint L'Overture, and Jacob Lawrence with empathy and mindfulness. We extend our gratitude to Alyssa Barca, Anastasia Soutsos, Bronwyn Doss, Emma Anderson, and Nia Dowling for designing our physical exhibit; Annie Paxton, Ava Echard, Carolina Muonz-Velazquez, Talia Kriegel, and William Armacrost for writing our interpretive and promotional labels; and Andre Adams, Cecilia Elsisi, Charles Cheng, Giuliana Angotti, and Marcy Le Grand for designing this website.
