Haiti to Harlem: Toussaint L'Ouverture & Jacob Lawrence

Imprints and Impact

If at times my productions do not express the conventionally beautiful, there is always an effort to express the universal beauty of man's continuous struggle to lift his social position and to add dimension to his spiritual being.

Jacob Lawrence

This collection here at William & Mary offers an opportunity to have conversations about the histories of revolutions in the past extending to today. By creating a print series based on Toussaint L’Ouverture’s life, Jacob Lawrence created a dialogue between 20th century Harlem and colonial Haiti. By engaging with Lawrence's art in a meaningful way, we may discover how we can extend the connection to the adversities that we endure in the modern day. We invite you to share your story and thoughts on art as a medium for storytelling and empowerment. In our effort to forge a community around our fight for modern revolution, we can prove we can do hard things for personal and collective liberation and that the struggle for change is always worth the freedom that change brings.
