I Expect You To Die, released on June 3, 2015, is a virtual reality computer game developed for the Oculus Rift by Schell Games -- one of the largest independent video game development studios in the world, which employs about 100 people and prides itself with making “transformational games and innovative, interactive experiences”(1).
I Expect You To Die is a free demo that as its website aptly states: “Lets [players] step into the world of an elite secret agent to attempt to survive a series of deadly situations. The goal is to complete the mission using brain power, cunning and a top secret device that gives you the power of telekinesis”(2). The game currently only has one level developed, which traps the player inside an evil villain's car, on a plane, where the cabin is humorously filled with poisonous gas.
In this very James Bond-esque experience players must solve a segment of puzzles to escape the red-velvet lined automotive prison using the computer mouse to float objects in virtual space and interact with bombs, features of the car, or to press buttons and devices that do everything from fire smoke launchers, to release scorpions. The two environments players interact in –– the main menu and the villain’s car –– are in full 3D virtual space, filled with objects that players can move and manipulate. The unique experience of moving around 3D objects, interacting with virtual surroundings and solving puzzles are both fun and very fulfilling.
