Multi-versity: Beyond Physical Space and Time
What is needed is a new kind of university (or “Multi-versity” as Braidotti calls it) that fits the dynamic posthuman predicament: concepts like open source, open governance, and open data will become central tenets of the new university.
Examples
1. The use of Holographic Telepresence can bring digital participants and remote location into the class in 3D.
2. Virtual platform and VR campus
Launched on the heels of the 2008 financial crisis, eXp Realty beat the odds, going public this past May and surpassing a $1B market cap on day one of trading.
3. Space Borrowing
Students/teachers will be able to book a public conference room anytime/anywhere.
4. 3D Printer
3D Printing allows teachers and students to bring their ideas to life without having to visit a specific place.
Ex. Local students use 3D printers to create prosthetic hands for children around the world.
5. Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and OpenCourseWare (OCW)
Students can take as many courses they want online without having go to the school. Also, they don't need to be registered at only one institution.
- Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) examples: Youtube, Udemy, Coursera, Edx, Udacity, Khan Academy, Singularity University, or Minerva School. [Some of them are free, but some are not. It varies individually.]
- OpenCourseWare (OCW) examples: MIT, UC Berkeley, Yale OCW [All free]
These platforms will be especially helpful for students with ADHD/Asperger syndrome. Or for those who think they do not fully fit into any school.
